One of Chile’s trendiest new hotels is in the nearby town of Puerto Varas. Hotel AWA is a modern masterpiece that sits proudly on Lake Llanquihue.

This passion project of owner-architect, Mauricio Fuentes, was designed using local materials such as flagstone, volcanic rock and wood from cypress trees to create a space that’s sympathetic to its unique environment.

Whilst reinforced concrete and angular structures might denote Hotel AWA’s impressive architectural facade, the interiors are warm and welcoming. The debonair design scheme features Mapuche crafts, fur throws, wooden floorboards and floor-to-ceiling windows that allow for ample sunlight to stream in.

The best bit? Those vast, sparkling windows allow for truly remarkable views over Osorno Volcano.

There are guides at Hotel AWA who will happily organise activities and visits to some of the region’s most beautiful sights. The Petrohué Waterfalls should be at the top of your must-see list.
